Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPPA, Open Source software licenses, consumer data protection, risk management, and software patents – these are just a few of the areas in which regulatory and legal issues affect IS management. Across a variety of industries, firms’ ability to use and manage information technology is increasingly tied to their ability to understand and work with the complex legal issues associated with information systems and data management. In this Current Topics in MIS course, using a combination of readings, discussion, presentations, and projects, you will examine the legal and regulatory challenges associated with IS management and consider the strategies, structures, and approaches that firms use to manage these issues.
