The goal of this course is to introduce students to the concepts and nomenclature of computer and network security. The course will give students insight into the, who, what, where, when, and why of security issues. It begins with the psychology of hackers and hacking. Why are there hackers? Why do hackers hack? What type of person does hacking? What do they get out of doing it? The rest of the course concentrates on types of host and network attacks, how they are done, what to do when attacks occur, and how to prevent future attacks. We will look at access control and site security, review TCP/IP networking as it pertains to security issues, look in depth at attack methods, examine the functionality of firewalls, examine host security, briefly examine some elements of cryptography, try to understand methods of handling incident and disaster response, and finally examine how best to manage the security function in an organization.
