CBA IS Excellence Award

From Information Systems at Pitt Business

Jump to: navigation, search

The CBA IS Excellence Award recognizes exemplary work in the Introduction to Information Systems course project and provides you with a way to differentiate yourself, no matter what your major is, as someone who is interested and able to apply information systems to improve business performance.

In the Introduction to Information Systems course (BUSMIS 1060), you focus on developing the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to be able to recognize and capitalize on opportunities to use information systems to increase efficiency, improve performance, and support innovation. A key part of the course is a multi-stage project in which you, initially alone and then in small teams, analyze an organizational activity, identify ways that information systems can be used to improve that process, and then develop the basic business case for one of the improvement opportunities that you identify.

Student teams that demonstrate exemplary work in the BUSMIS 1060 course project will be nominated for the CBA IS Excellence Award. Nominated projects will be those that clearly exceed the baseline standards and demonstrate the ability to analyze a business activity, creatively identify meaningful opportunities to improve that activity through the application of information systems, and outline a convincing business case for an improvement opportunity. This nomination will be made based on the consensus of the BUSMIS 1060 instructors and the Director of the Undergraduate IS program. Selection will be based on evaluation of team progress during the project, the deliverables provided at each stage, and peer feedback from the poster sessions associated with each stage.

Nominated teams will be invited to present their final project poster at a reception at the end of the semester. All Award nominees present at the reception will receive prizes from the Award sponsors (Protiviti and CBA). They will also have the opportunity to present their work to and talk with sponsor representatives.

The CBA IS Excellence Award winners will be chosen from among the teams presenting at the Award reception. The BUSMIS 1060 instructors, the Director of the Undergrad IS program, and the sponsor representative(s) will choose the project which best demonstrates exemplary creativity, ingenuity, and application of the skills and concepts needed to successfully apply information systems to create business value. This award will be accompanied by a cash prize of $100 for each team member who is present at the award reception.
