Critical Perspectives on IS Management
BMIS 2597
Credits: 1.5
Prerequisites: none

Information systems are embedded in a complex web of organizational structures, professional practices, technical infrastructures, and economic decisions. Even small changes in the design or management of a firm’s systems can have significant consequences (intended and unintended) for individuals, teams, business units, industries, and even society as a whole. Whether you are formally part of the IS function or not, your success as a leader of IT enabled business initiatives is dependent on your ability to understand the full range of implications for your work, your team and your firm.

In this class you will learn strategies for anticipating and managing the complex implications of IT enabled business initiatives.

Topics will include:

  • Business agility, reliability and IT infrastructure management
  • IT impacts on retail value chain systems
  • Business implications of data quality
  • Strategic alignment and IT investment

This Current Topics in MIS course will be conducted as a seminar, combining discussion, poster presentations, and guest speakers. Readings will include consultant and vendor materials, academic research, and non-traditional sources (science fiction, movies and television) chosen to help you examine a range of perspectives on each issue. For assignments you will create a position paper, a technology report, and an issue analysis.
