Frequently Asked Questions
From Information Systems at Pitt Business
I already have an MIS background. How can the MBA/MS-MIS program help me?
- This program is ideal for students with formal or informal MIS background. At the business level, the student obtains an MBA from a recognized institution. At the same time the student will obtain an MS in MIS. For students with MIS background, the program provides the IS specific managerial skills required to suceed as an MIS leader and move into information management positions. For students with informal MIS background, the MS-MIS degree provides a graduate-level validation of the student's MIS knowledge.
I do not have an MIS background. Can the MBA/MS-MIS program help me?
- Although the program is ideally suited for candidates with MIS background; students without MIS background may benefit if they expect to work not in the IS field itself but in other business functional areas where IS knowledege may constitute an added advantage. Students in this situation may look for positions such as business strategy, e-commerce or IT auditing.
What is the minimum GMAT score to be accepted into the program?
- There is not a cutoff minimum score to be accepted into the program. In addition to GMAT, experience and previous academic performance is taken into account. However, the candidate should try to have a GMAT score consistent with the class average for the specific year of his/her application (statistics from the previous year are usually available as a reference).
Could I get a pre-assessment if I am a suitable candidate for the program?
- The best way to find out if you can be accepted into the program is by applying to it. A pre-assesment is not possible given that the admission committee requires to evaluate all the documents related to the application before being able to give an opinion.
Do MIS students take the same classes as the MBA students?
- MIS students take MBA courses along with the MBA students. Similarly, MBA students may take MIS courses as electives into their MBA coursework. MIS students have the opportunity to fully interact with MBA students. Both programs are fully integrated.
What is the usual class size for the MBA/MS-MIS courses?
- The normal class size for core MBA courses is 40-45 students while the typical elective class has 25-35 students. For MIS courses, class sizes tend to be smaller.
Do all classes take place during the day?
- MBA/MIS core classes are usually during the day while MBA/MIS elective courses are usually at night allowing students to have classes with working MBA participants (evening program).
Does everybody get good jobs after graduation from the MBA/MS-MIS program?
- Dual-degree students have an excellent placement record. Most students have job offers by the time they graduate in April. One important success factor for this is the summer internship. The quality of the summer internship strongly influences the job opportunities at the end of the program.
