[edit] Professional Development Plan

In 10 years, I would like to be known as an expert in the fields of Information Technology and Business Management,
specifically as an individual who can:

  • Review and compare existing IT infrastructure and businesses processes versus corporate strategy and objectives.
  • Develop and implement a roadmap for IT and business units to bring existing infrastructure in line with corporate objectives.

Knowledge

  • What is needed - project management
  • Action(s) to take - project management coursework
  • This will move me closer to my goal because - project management is a necessary skill to have

Practice

  • What is needed - project management
  • Action(s) to take - project management coursework
  • This will move me closer to my goal because - will provide some exposure to the issues that arise when working on projects.

Learning

  • What is needed - knowledge of resources available to stay current
  • Action(s) to take - research what resources are available, how to access/tap into them, and make it a habit.
  • This will move me closer to my goal because - this will allow me to stay current with the latest thinking, techniques, etc., and will provide the means of doing so post-Katz.

Dialog

  • What is needed - access to learned peers and experts in field
  • Action(s) to take - research on-line forums and other sources of information and discussion
  • This will move me closer to my goal because - enlighten me on schools of thought regarding current and/or controversial topics, and the supporting arguments for all sides.

Networking

  • What is needed - steady stream of contact with peers (inside and outside of field)
  • Action(s) to take - research forums (on & off-line) and speaker presentations available, and then attend/participate
  • This will move me closer to my goal because - keep in steady contact with issues & who’s who & meet various peers, & through social interaction build a foundation from which to launch reputation

Reputation

  • What is needed - Knowledge, Practice, Learning, Dialog, Networking
  • Action(s) to take - start laying foundation: learn skills needed, peruse resources, network.
  • This will move me closer to my goal because - this will help get my name out, and also expose current issues; once foundation is laid, we build upon it.

Evaluation of Past Year

No Professional Development plan prior to this term; however, courses taken are in line with new career focus:

  • E-Commerce: latest thinking for on-line businesses
  • Systems Analysis: needed to learn project management
  • E-Commerce & Supply Chain: more narrowed focus on Supply Chain, which ties to MBA part of dual-degree.
  • Network Security: learned key security issues, and some basic business continuity planning issues.
