[edit] Research
Xiaoqing Wang explores the relationships among online communities, focusing on how a community's competitive enviornment affects internal membership dynamics. Initial analyses using data on Usenet newsgroups show that both internal characteristics and external context affect communities' capability to retain members. The extent to which a community shares content with other communities and the extent to which the community's members also participate in other communities represent an external threat, which is found to predict a lower likelihood of members to return in the following time period. The results suggest that online communities compete with each other for member attentions and efforts. The impact of competition on member retention depends on internal group characteristics such as the nature of group commitment and the level of contribution.
